It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the web site of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA), a federated state association of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). KMEA was formed in 1941 from several Kentucky organizations involved with different aspects of music education, and today represents approximately 2000 music educators from P-16.

The mission of the Kentucky Music Educators Association shall be to advance the cause of music education throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky by encouraging the study and making of music by all of the population and by serving as a strong advocate for issues affecting the accomplishment of that mission.

In pursuit of this mission KMEA sponsors assessment events for bands, choirs, orchestras, instrumental jazz ensembles, solos, ensembles, and also oversees competitive events and a state championship opportunity for marching bands. Our Professional Development Conference provides KY music educators the opportunity for their students to participate in All-State ensembles, to hear a variety of the finest performing groups in the state, and to learn new techniques from nationally recognized clinicians. KMEA is also actively involved in advocacy efforts on behalf of music education with state and federal legislators, the KY Department of Education, and the KY Board of Education.

The Preamble of NAfME complements our mission very well: Music allows us to celebrate and preserve our cultural heritages, and also to explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge. Therefore, every individual should be guaranteed the opportunity to learn music and to share in musical experiences.

Music is indeed a powerful force in education and life, and KMEA is dedicated to keeping music as a valued curricular component for all students in the Commonwealth.
