District Presidents shall appoint or make arrangements for the election of a District Chair for Mentoring. DIstrict Mentoring Chairs will identify all new teachers in their district. They may poll their district
KMEA membership to help in this search. They should assign
mentors from the district mentoring list and their district
KMEA lists including retired members. A minimum of 10
years experience teaching is desirable but not mandatory.
Grade level, division type/area of specialty should match
for greater efficiency. When this process is complete,
District Mentoring Chairs should email a
list of mentees with their assigned mentor to the state
chair. Both mentors and mentees should be notified of
the assignments, urged to complete the application form
(if they have not already done so) and e-mail them to
the chairman by September 1 to supplement the state mentor
list. All forms and documents are on the website. There
may also be on-line applications received at the state
level.
Mentors and mentees should meet face-to-face
to begin the process in August, and then meet at least monthly
thereafter through May. Subsequent meetings may be face-to-face
but may also utilize e-mail or phone. Mentors will be asked
to keep a log of communications including topics discussed
with mentees. This will help form a list of suggested topics
for the future on the KMEA website. Limited funds are available
for expenses related to travel and meals for mentors/mentees.
Apply for reimbursement through the log sheet.
New teachers should be strongly encouraged
to attend the KMEA conference and attend new teacher sessions.
A limited number of scholarships are available for mentees
to attend the conference. Apply for scholarship by e mailing
the chairman.
Mentors and mentees will answer a questionnaire
to provide feedback which will be used to guide and improve
the overall program.
The mentoring program chair will report to the KMEA board
the results of the participation and feedback from the
mentorship program. Changes will be implemented as are
deemed necessary for the new school year through the KMEA
Board.
Watch the KMEA
website for information, forms, procedures,
and “do’s
and don’ts” related to the new mentoring
program to be posted.
