Commonwealth String Orchestra

The CSO debuted in 1993. The first clinic took place in a hot, cramped rehearsal space on the 2nd floor of the Kentucky Center for the Arts. From 1994 to 2006, the clinic/performance has been presented in the Commonwealth Convention Center (renamed the Kentucky International Convention Center in 2001.) In 2007 the CSO concert was added to the Orchestra Concert and held in The Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall. The CSO was first envisioned by Myron McLain and coordinated by Nancy McLain with his assistance as a “reading ensemble,” a training group for the growing number of students narrowly missing the All-State Symphony Orchestra cut. From 1993-1999 it filled one of the Orchestra Division’s clinic spots. In 2000 it was officially sanctioned by the KMEA board as an All-State ensemble. Thanks to Myron & Nancy’s vision, dedication, and perseverance an additional 50-60 string students each year have the opportunity of an All-State Orchestra experience.
