Letter from Brad Rogers, Band Chair:

June 16-18, 2009 marks the 9th year for the Summer Band Symposium, a unique event that began in 2001 as a way for directors to meet in a more relaxed setting, at a more relaxed time of year, and have time to attend clinics and discuss “Kentucky band world” issues. This year’s event will include plenty of opportunities for professional development, discussion, and kicking back.

Every band teacher should find something of interest in the scheduled clinic presentations. This year’s “How the Best Start the Best…” sessions regarding working with beginning and developing students will deal with flute and trombone this summer.

Keith Vincent will present “8 to 5--Eight Steps to a Successful Marching Band Program”, a session which will be valuable to both new and “seasoned” band teachers alike.

Dr. Jerry Tolson of the University of Louisville will return to present a clinic on how to encourage the organization, care and feeding of jazz programs—especially in programs where none presently exists.

An opportunity to learn from one of Kentucky’s master Middle School directors will find Paul Metzger’s presentation on techniques for efficient and productive rehearsals makes for a session not to be missed.

Everyone has experienced having an instrument in need of repair after an accident, or just because “Murphy” showed up for the concert. It always happens at the worst possible time. All band directors will benefit from a clinic session presented by Opus Horn Repair’s Larry Long on instrument repair and maintenance that you can do—and what you shouldn’t attempt to do.

How will the major changes from Frankfort mean to band programs, directors, and the curriculum? Now that the CATS is dead, where do we go from here? Can we as directors have a voice in shaping the future of evaluation and curriculum? Phil Shepherd will visit and give us his take on this subject from the point of view of the Dept. of Education and the Legislature.

There will be a golf scramble on Tuesday afternoon that is well suited for the free-swinging and the frequent-swinging duffers. Prizes will be provided by Doug Neal of DeMoulin Uniforms.

All events will be held at the Baymont Inn and Suites in Elizabethtown. A special rate of $65 plus tax is available for Symposium guests ($24 per night lower than last year). Registration for the Symposium is available through the KMEA website. Whether you come for the meetings, the golf, the clinics, the concert, the food, or just to hang out with the best group of professional educators on the planet, there is something for everyone at the 2009 Summer Band Symposium. Will you be in Elizabethtown on June 16th-18th?
