| Julie
White received the 2008-2009 Governor's Awards in the
Arts for the state of Kentucky. Julie will retire at
the end of this year from the Owensboro Public Schools.
The school district is interviewing candidates for her
position as Fine Arts Coordinator.
Owensboro High School is completing a 24 million dollar
building project that includes a Fine Arts Suite with
Wenger practice rooms, IT rooms, robotic cameras that
will be able to broadcast programs all over the district,
new visual art rooms and updated drama facilities.
At the KMEA Large Ensemble Assessments every participating
group from Owensboro Public Schools received a Distinguished
Rating. This included Owensboro 5-6 Center Chorus, 6th
Grade Band, and 6th Grade Orchestra; Owensboro Middle
School Chorus, Band, and Orchestra, and Owensboro High
School Chorus, Chamber Choir, Band, and Orchestra. Directors
are Alecia Meyer, Paula Humphreys, Wade Wiggins, Danny
Humphreys, Jenifer Wiggins, Greg Olson, Mike DiPasquale,
and Jon Button.
Over 1300 students participated in the Owensboro Public
Schools Fine Arts Festival at RiverPark Center this year
which was a celebration of a decade of performances there.David
Ruckdeschel was selected as one of 24 teachers (1 of
8) for Middle School and the only band director for Ashland’s
Teacher of the year award for 2009. In addition, he received
a legislative citation from the House of Representatives
and Tommy Thompson for this recognition.
The Daviess County Middle School Band earned a first
place over three other bands and a Superior rating at
the Music In the Parks Festival in St. Louis.
Sara Elliott reports that the All-State auditions for
choir will be held at Apollo
the first Thursday of October to comply with all district
schools’ fall break.
District II Elementary Honor Choir was held on Saturday,
April 18, 2009 at Owensboro High School. Jenifer Wiggins
of OHS was the guest conductor and Joyce Goodwin was
the accompanist. The participating schools and directors
were Sutton Elementary, Vic Harrison; Cravens Elementary,
Natalie Francis; Owensboro 5-6 Center, Alecia Meyer;
Eastview Elementary, Deidre Goodman; Burns Elementary,
Debra Lanham; West Louisville, Gail Waller; Fordsville
and Horse Branch Elementaries, Sandra Mullikin; Hancock
County, Mary Jane Owens. Alecia Meyer is the Honor Choir
Coordinator.
The Hopkins County Central Band received distinguished
ratings at both the District and State KMEA Concert Festivals
this year. The band is under the director of John Grace.
The College View Middle School 6th grade beginning band
and 7th/8th grade concert band under the direction of
Jed Manire, received ratings of Excellent at the Music
In The Parks Festival in Cincinnati.
